California Pre-Existing Condition Health Insurance Pool (PCIP) Could be Capped in 2 Months

If you’re a Californian with a pre-existing condition and haven’t joined the California Pre-existing Condition Health Insurance Program (PCIP), it’s time to start thinking about it. According to the latest figures, the State of California may have to cap enrollment in the PCIP program if new federal dollars aren’t allocated for it. Just a few months ago, the State of California had announced that it was cutting the health insurance premiums of its PCIP by an average of 18%.

The PCIPs are a temporary measure which will continue until 2014, when health insurance must be offered to all Americans regardless of pre-existing conditions. Currently, Americans with pre-existing conditions are often denied health insurance coverage or are only offered health insurance which is prohibitively expensive.

Considering the lower-than-expected enrollment in the PCIP program, it’s surprising news. As many as 23,000 were expected to enroll in the PCIP program in California, but enrollment has languished at just a little more than 5,000.

However, after reviewing the first year of claims data, California is revising possible enrollment in its PCIP downward, way downward to 6,800. At the rate California is currently enrolling members in its PCIP, that means that California could be closing enrollment in its PCIP in as little as two months.

If you’re a Californian with a pre-existing condition and haven’t joined the California Pre-existing Condition Health Insurance Program (PCIP), it’s time to get on it! PCIPs are enrolling members on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you are at all interested in applying for a PCIP, we advise you to apply even if you are unsure if you qualify. More information on all of the state PCIPs is available at HealthCare.gov.
