AstraZeneca Sues to Block Release of Generic Crestor

Astrazeneca still at it!  The pharmaceutical giant continues to beat back threats on the patent of its blockbuster cholesterol drug Crestor, this week filing a lawsuit against Watson Pharmaceuticals.

Watson Pharmaceuticals is seeking Food and Drug Administration approval of a generic version of Crestor. Earlier this year, AstraZeneca filed a similar lawsuit against Sun Pharmaceuticals which had received tentative FDA approval for a generic version of Crestor.

Crestor is AstraZeneca’s best selling product with U.S. sales that totaled $1.26 billion in the first half of 2010 and worldwide sales of $2.73 billion. With a current pricetag of $125 a month, generic compeition would provide some very welcome relief to the millions of Americans who suffer from high-cholesterol.

Astrazeneca patent on Crestor is not due to expire until 2013.
